Humane wildlife removal & structural exclusion

Wildlife control that starts with how they got in.

Something is living in the attic, under the deck, or inside a wall — and every animal calls for a different plan. Identify it by the clues below, see exactly how we handle that species, and get it out humanely. Then we seal the building so this never becomes an annual event.

Start with the clue

You don’t need to know the species. The clues do.

Wildlife problems announce themselves — by sound, by time of day, by what gets left behind. Match what you’re hearing or seeing and go straight to that animal’s plan.

Symptom-first diagnosis Sound + time of day + evidence
  1. 1

Light scratching in the walls at night

Fast, papery scratching after dark — especially in fall and winter — is the signature of mice. Droppings the size of rice grains in drawers and cabinets confirm it.

  2. 2

    Heavier movement, gnawing, burrows outside

If the sounds are heavier, droppings are ½–¾ of an inch, or there are burrow holes along the foundation, you’re dealing with rats — a different animal needing rat-grade materials.

  3. 3

    Scampering overhead in the morning

Daytime activity in the ceiling — especially early morning and late afternoon — means squirrels. Check the roofline for gnawed fascia and entry holes.

  4. 4

Heavy thumps and dragging after dark

Slow, deliberate footsteps at night, torn soffits, or ripped shingles point to a raccoon — in spring, almost always a mother with kits.

  5. 5

Bats at dusk, droppings at the ridge

Anything exiting the roofline at dusk, staining at gaps, or droppings below the gable means a bat colony — protected, beneficial, and handled by exclusion only.

  6. 6

Odor under the deck, cone-shaped lawn digs

Persistent musky odor near a deck or shed plus small digs across the lawn is a denning skunk. Calm, spray-free eviction is the whole game.

  7. 7

Ridges and runways across the lawn

If the damage is outside only — raised tunnels, worn paths, gnawed bark — it’s moles or voles. They never enter the house; your lawn is the territory.

Humane wildlife removal

Seven species. Seven specific game plans.

Every animal we handle has its own page — how it gets in, the damage it does, and the humane, exclusion-first plan that ends it.

Bats

Protected

Attic roosting, dusk fly-outs, gaps as thin as a pencil. One-way valves timed around maternity season, then permanent sealing.

See the plan

Squirrels

Roofline

Daytime noise, gnawed fascia, chewed wiring. Humane one-way eviction plus chew-proof metal reinforcement.

See the plan

Raccoons

Humane

Torn soffits and heavy night footsteps. Mothers and kits kept together; raccoon-grade exclusion that holds.

See the plan

Skunks

Below grade

Denning under decks, sheds, and porches. Spray-free one-way eviction plus a buried barrier that closes the den for good.

See the plan

Mice

Most common

Dime-sized gaps, nests in the walls, litters every month. Poison-free trapping and whole-home mouse-proofing.

See the plan

Rats

Structural

Stronger jaws, foundation burrows, real damage. Rat-grade steel exclusion and behavior-based trapping.

Moles & Voles

Lawn

Tunnels, runways, and girdled trees — outdoors only. Species-specific trapping and habitat correction.

Our process

One method, every animal: out humanely, sealed permanently.

  • 01

    Inspect & identify

We confirm the species from the evidence — entry points, droppings, sounds, damage — and check for young in the den or roost.

  • 02

    Humane removal or eviction

One-way doors, valves, or hands-on removal — matched to the animal, timed and handled per applicable wildlife rules. Families stay together; nothing is sealed inside.

  • Structural Exclusion
    03

    Seal how they got in

Heavy-gauge metal, below-grade barriers, ridge and roofline reinforcement — the Eco Haven Structural Exclusion Systems™ close the routes permanently.

  • 04

    Clean up & restore

Droppings, guano, and contaminated insulation are assessed, with decontamination and insulation replacement arranged where needed.

  • 05

    Verify & warranty

Follow-ups confirm the building has gone quiet, and exclusion work is backed by our workmanship warranty.

  • Why Eco Haven

Removal is the easy half. We do both halves.

Anyone can trap an animal. Keeping the next one out is structural work — and that’s our specialty.

    Humane by default

No poisons, no animals sealed inside, mothers and young kept together — on every species.

    Exclusion-first permanence

Removal without sealing is a subscription. We fix the building so the problem actually ends.

    Wildlife-rules aware

Bats, raccoons, and squirrels carry timing and handling rules — we plan the work around them.

    Damage documented

Gnawed wiring, torn roofing, and contamination are recorded for your contractor and insurer.

    Cleanup arranged

Guano, latrines, and ruined insulation don’t clean themselves — decontamination is part of finishing the job.

    Workmanship warranty

Exclusion work is backed by Eco Haven’s workmanship warranty, detailed in your service agreement.

Bats Gaps of 3/8″ — dusk fly-outs at ridge and gable vents; protected species
Squirrels Roofline entries — the daytime animal; gnawed fascia and dormers
Raccoons Tear in with strength — torn soffits, uncapped chimneys; night footsteps

Moles & Voles Outdoors only — lawn ridges, surface runways, girdled bark

    FAQ

    Questions homeowners ask about wildlife

    Do you kill the animals?

No — our model is humane eviction and exclusion. One-way doors and valves let animals leave on their own; rodent work uses snap traps rather than poisons (nothing dies in your walls, and owls, foxes, and pets stay safe); and protected species like bats are never harmed.

    What if there are babies?

Spring and summer dens usually have young. Evictions are timed and managed per applicable wildlife rules so mothers and young leave together — sealing an animal inside is the one mistake that guarantees worse damage.

    Is removing the animal enough?

Almost never. The entry route is the actual problem — the next animal finds the same gap, burrow, or roofline detail. Every wildlife job pairs removal with structural exclusion, which is why our work carries a warranty.

How fast can you get here?

Wildlife calls get priority scheduling — especially animals in living spaces, active tearing damage, or a bat found indoors. Call or text and we’ll triage it immediately.

What’s the difference between wildlife control and pest control?

Wildlife means vertebrates — mammals and bats — where the answer is humane eviction plus building reinforcement. Insects are our pest control services — different biology, different methods.

    What areas do you serve?

Eco Haven provides humane wildlife removal and structural exclusion across Upstate New York and Southwest Vermont — homes, camps, barns, and commercial buildings.

Still not sure what you’re dealing with? Real local people answer — no call centers. Same-day help on urgent pest or wildlife calls.
